Scandinavia, Day 6 – Bornholm
This was a relaxing day, as we expected it would be. We didn’t dock in the small Danish island of Bornholm until noon, so we used the morning to try to catch up on our blog and attend a lecture on Cabarets in Berlin from 1920-1940.
The second was enjoyable as it talked about Bertold Brecht, Kurt Weill, Marlene Dietrich, of course, Bob Fosse with Joel Grey and Liza Minnelli.
As to the first, this blog is getting more frustrating due to limited internet connectivity. Jim was finally successful in getting Day 4 posted after trying ( between the two of us) at least 6 times. Enough already.
We boarded the bus after a quick light lunch to see our panoramic tour of this island. The men enjoyed it a bit more than the ladies as we had a very young, beautiful blond Danish woman leading it. Whatever she didn’t know, I’m pretty sure she made up🤣. It really didn’t matter as she was entertaining.
Bonhomme is a Danish island closer to Poland and Sweden than it is to Denmark. It has a population about 40,000 people, 14,000 of whom live in its capital Ronne.
It is very agricultural and produces much wheat, barley and corn to feed its livestock including 300,000 pigs. Much of that is exported along with another large crop, canola/rapeseed oil.
The island is very rural with a lifestyle to match. She shared with us that there are only four cops on the entire island. Almost all tickets are for speeding🤪. We were very surprised to see two vintage 1950's American cars being driven on the island - no idea why they were there.
We drove through a crowded beach area, happy to see families out and about, despite the weather which was cloudy and getting ready to shower. The remains of a large castle attracts a lot of crowds, but we didn’t stop.
We did make one stop at an unusual round church, Østerlars Church. Built in 1156, it features lovely gardens and gravestones in the surrounding area.
Wendy had a nice time in the spa pools upon our return.
Ate a good dinner in the World Cafe with Stefanie and Bob— among the buffet items: lamb chops and sushi, a lively combination!
The biggest excitement of the day came after dinner. We made our way to the front the ship, the Explorer’s Lounge, first to join a sing-along, then stayed and joined a great team for trivia. It was only 15 questions— our team got 14 correct and won! Bragging rights only except for a so-so mimosa as a prize. We hope to join them again next time!
To bed early, tomorrow is our big and extremely long day in Berlin.
